Chapter 25

Knight Makayla hadn’t made it more than three rungs down the ladder when things flew at her from the darkness.

She batted one away with her sword, then slid the rest of the way down the ladder, hitting the ground and rolling hard to her left.

She sprang back to her feet, the golden light of her sword illuminating the small space as she cleaved through three zombies.

But there were so many of them, and the space was so small.

She fought hard, using her shield as a battering ram to buy herself enough space to swing her sword.

Still, they came.

Pulling on her, trying to drag her down to the ground. Clawing at her armor as they tried to tear it off of her.

She screamed as the cold of the wraith that had escaped burned through her, slowing her just enough for the zombies to slip inside her defenses.

“Come to me, Makayla,” a voice called, silky and seductive. “Say the word, and I will destroy them all for you.”

She was a Knight of Valor. She would die before she gave in to whatever lurked in the darkness.

Even if that death was being eaten alive by zombies.

May they all burn from the holy light in her blood.

She screamed again as teeth gnashed against her armor.

“Makayla!”

“Rohan, don’t come down here!”

But he was already at her side, a torch in one hand as his curved sword glowed faintly with holy light from the water she’d blessed.

He sliced through three zombies, cleaving them in half.

Two more of the soldiers followed them down, carving their way through the undead with the same glowing swords.

Makayla was very glad she’d blessed the water.

Shoving herself back up, she protected King Rohan’s back as he protected her.

But she could already feel the dark magic surging around them, see the pieces of the zombies shuddering beneath it.

They wouldn’t stay dead long.

She stared down at the darkness beneath their feet.

“They brought dirt from the Scar here. I’m sure of it. That’s what’s fueling the undead. We must-”

“Silence!” The word snapped through the small space.

The soldiers turned their torches towards the far corner of the small space, but the light couldn’t penetrate the shadows.

“Come closer, Makayla. Viscountess Makayla. Knight Makayla. Queen Makayla.” The thing laughed. “How many disguises you wear!”

When Makayla didn’t immediately comply, a pained cry emanated from the darkness.

“I kept him alive for you. So much delicious dragon blood. It’s been so long, too long, since I last feasted on dragon blood.”

Slurping sounds echoed through the tiny chamber, and Makayla fought back her revulsion.

She whispered another prayer to Dracor, and the golden fire on her blade intensified as she stepped forward.

The light from the holy fire shattered the darkness, revealing an altar made of packed earth. High Prince Thomas was stretched across the altar with his wrists and ankles shackled to the walls.

Blood stained him, thick and fresh, as a man stood in front of him holding a blackened dagger.

“Run, Rohan, please,” High Prince Thomas pleaded.

The man stabbed him through the side with the dagger, and High Prince Thomas screamed as he coughed fresh blood.
